I have received an interesting analogy to explain between being under law and under grace. For example, now that we are under grace, it is like we are studying in a school where there are no exams and no obvious change of class. However there is a general awareness of growth that is expected. We are expected to grow in God, to reach greater levels in our walk with God without being under specific rules. Without disobeying any specific rule, it is still possible for God to discipline us because we are to find growth taking place in us. A student in the 3rd grade level of mindset cannot be expected to be in the 3rd grade level of mindset after 5 years even though he doesn’t have to pass any exams on the way. The very fact of discipline by God means that living under grace is not being in a passive state where ‘I will grow because God will cause me to grow and if I am not growing, it is because He is not doing what He is supposed to do. So in the meantime I can relax – qua sera sera, whatever will be, will be’. I hope that is not the way we finally begin to look at grace since we have now reached ‘greater heights of understanding regarding grace’!
